
Two time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas has announced that she will leave Barcelona Femeni after spending 14 years at the club in what marks the end of one of the most successful eras in women’s football.
The 32 year old midfielder confirmed her departure on Tuesday just days after captaining Barcelona to another UEFA Women’s Champions League title following their victory in the final on Saturday.
Putellas leaves the Spanish club as one of the most decorated female footballers in history after winning 38 trophies with Barcelona including 10 league titles and four UEFA Women’s Champions League trophies.

The Spanish international also holds the record as Barcelona Women’s all time leading scorer after netting 232 goals in 507 appearances for the club. She is additionally the second highest appearance maker in the history of the team sitting just nine matches behind former teammate Melanie Serrano.
In an emotional farewell message shared on social media, Putellas reflected on her journey with Barcelona saying she wanted to leave the club while still performing at her highest level.
“I said I wanted the final moment to come when I was at my best, giving everything and with 100 percent energy,” said Putellas.
“It has been a perfect story,” she added while thanking Barcelona supporters for their support throughout her career.
Putellas joined Barcelona at a young age and went on to become one of the biggest figures in women’s football helping transform the club into one of the most dominant teams in Europe.
The midfielder won back to back Ballon d’Or awards in 2021 and 2022 following outstanding performances for both club and country. She also played a key role in helping Spain women’s national football team win the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023 and later helped Spain reach the final of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 tournament where they finished runners up to England.
Putellas missed Euro 2022 after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury just before the tournament but successfully returned to action the following season and regained top form.
Reports from England indicate that London City Lionesses are interested in signing the experienced midfielder ahead of next season after holding discussions with her representatives for several months. The London club recently completed their debut season in the Women’s Super League finishing sixth and are now looking to strengthen their squad with experienced players.
Football analysts have described Putellas’ departure as the end of a historic chapter for Barcelona Women due to her impact both on and off the pitch. During her time at the club, Barcelona Women became one of the strongest teams in world football attracting record crowds and increasing the popularity of women’s football globally.
At one point more than 90,000 fans filled Camp Nou to watch Barcelona Women in a Champions League match highlighting the growth of the women’s game during Putellas’ era at the club.
Barcelona fans have continued sending emotional messages to the midfielder online with many describing her as one of the greatest players in the history of the club and women’s football.
