Matatu Strike Put on Hold for One Week After Talks

The Matatu Owners Association, digital cab operators, and other transport stakeholders have agreed to suspend the nationwide strike for one week following talks with the government aimed at resolving grievances raised by the sector.

The decision is expected to pave the way for the gradual resumption of normal public transport operations across the country.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 19, by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen during a press briefing at Harambee House in Nairobi after interministerial discussions with representatives from the transport industry.

He confirmed that negotiations between the government and stakeholders will continue over the next week, running up to May 26, as both sides seek a lasting solution to the issues raised.

Following the agreement, the Matatu Owners Association urged its members to return to work immediately to allow room for continued dialogue and avoid further disruption of transport services.

The association emphasized the importance of maintaining service delivery as talks proceed.

However, transport operators cautioned that the suspension is temporary and depends on the outcome of the ongoing negotiations.

They warned that failure by the government to honour commitments made during the talks could trigger a resumption of the strike once the one-week period lapses.

The development marks a temporary relief for commuters who have faced disruptions in recent days, with stakeholders expressing cautious optimism that the negotiations will yield a long-term resolution to the dispute.
