Witnesses said the boda bodas collided amid the confusion and during a high-speed attempt to escape, resulting in multiple casualties.

Police officers later arrived at the scene and removed the bodies as efforts to restore calm in the area intensified.

By the time of this publication authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident, while the condition of the injured riders remained unclear.

The fatal crash occurred amid nationwide protests under the #RejectFuelPrices demonstrations, which disrupted transport services and movement in several regions.

Matatu operators, boda boda riders, and other transport stakeholders staged protests following the latest fuel price increase announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

Drivers accused the government of failing to address the economic burden caused by the rising cost of fuel, saying the increases had severely affected livelihoods and the transport sector.
