Dr. Gikonyo Denies Shielding Gachagua During Impeachment Proceedings

Dan Gikonyo has dismissed allegations that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was concealed at Karen Hospital during the impeachment proceedings in October 2024.

Appearing before the court on Wednesday, May 13, Dr. Gikonyo maintained that Gachagua was genuinely unwell at the time and noted that the hospital possesses medical records and supporting documentation related to his admission.

The cardiologist told the court that he has been treating Gachagua since 2006 and personally handled his care during the October 2024 hospitalization at Karen Hospital.

According to Dr. Gikonyo, Gachagua was admitted after experiencing chest pains, symptoms which he said could potentially indicate a heart attack depending on a patient’s medical history and risk factors.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was admitted to Karen Hospital in Nairobi on October 17, 2024, after reportedly experiencing severe chest pains.

According to cardiologist Dan Gikonyo, Gachagua arrived at the hospital at around 3 PM and was immediately placed under medical observation for between 48 and 72 hours.

Dr. Gikonyo said the former Deputy President underwent several medical examinations, including blood tests and ECG scans, to determine whether he was facing any serious cardiac complications.

He further noted that Gachagua was in stable condition during the admission, with doctors continuing to monitor his progress and conduct additional investigations.

During his impeachment proceedings, Rigathi Gachagua was unable to appear before the Senate after developing health complications that led to his admission at Karen Hospital.

Senior Counsel Paul Muite told the Senate that doctors attending to Gachagua had recommended complete rest as he underwent treatment and medical assessment.

The development forced the Senate to briefly halt the impeachment hearing pending updates on the former Deputy President’s condition.
