An emotional chapter in Kenyan football came to a close today as Gusii Stadium hosted what is expected to be its final competitive match before entering a major reconstruction phase aimed at transforming the historic venue into a modern world-class sporting facility.
Thousands of passionate football fans from Kisii, Nyamira, and neighboring counties flooded the iconic stadium hours before kickoff, fully aware that they were witnessing the final moments of a ground that has defined football culture in the Gusii region for decades.
The FKF Premier League encounter between Shabana FC and Ulinzi Stars ended in a tense 0-0 draw, but the result mattered little to the emotionally charged supporters who packed the terraces from the first whistle to the last. The atmosphere inside the stadium resembled a celebration rather than an ordinary league fixture, with drums, whistles, club songs, and nonstop chants echoing throughout the afternoon.
For many supporters, the match symbolized far more than football. It represented the closing of a historic era that has produced unforgettable memories for generations of fans who have grown up supporting Shabana FC inside the famous stadium popularly known for its electric atmosphere.

Immediately after the final whistle, emotional scenes unfolded across the terraces as fans remained inside the venue long after players had left the pitch. Some supporters took photos and videos around the aging terraces while others sang traditional club songs in what many described as a farewell tribute to one of Kenya’s most passionate football grounds.
Shabana FC players and technical staff also acknowledged the emotional weight of the occasion by walking around the stadium applauding supporters who have stood by the club through difficult years both in lower divisions and in the FKF Premier League.
Gusii Stadium has long been considered the heartbeat of football in the larger Gusii region. Over the years, the venue has hosted countless memorable league encounters, political gatherings, school competitions, and community events, making it one of the most culturally significant stadiums in western Kenya.
However, despite its rich history and passionate fanbase, the stadium has for years struggled with outdated infrastructure, poor drainage, limited seating capacity, and facilities that no longer meet modern football standards. The need for redevelopment became increasingly urgent as Kenya intensified preparations for hosting future continental competitions, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
The government-backed renovation project is expected to completely transform the stadium into a modern 14,000-seater sports complex that meets both CAF and FIFA standards. The redevelopment plan includes the installation of a standard playing surface, modern dressing rooms, VIP sections, floodlights, improved terraces, media facilities, an athletics track, and upgraded security systems.
President William Ruto previously confirmed the government’s commitment to upgrading Gusii Stadium as part of a nationwide sports infrastructure development plan intended to nurture talent and position Kenya as a major sporting destination in Africa.

During the renovation period, Shabana FC is expected to temporarily host its home matches at alternative venues until construction works are completed. Club supporters have already begun discussing possible temporary grounds, though many admit replacing the atmosphere of Gusii Stadium will be nearly impossible.
While demolition and construction works are expected to begin, many supporters believe the spirit of Gusii Stadium will never disappear. Instead, they hope the reconstruction marks the beginning of a bigger and brighter future for football in the Gusii region.
