Karen Nyamu Apologises Over Remarks About Female Student Visiting Senate

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has been forced to apologise over inappropriate remarks she made while welcoming a student at the Senate.

According to reports, the student had been visiting the Speaker’s Gallery on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, when Nyamu made the controversial remarks.

In the controversial remarks, the nominated Senator embarrassed the grade ten student by asking her the kind of service she wanted to offer.

“Madam, welcome to the senate, and Mr. Speaker, probably you should have made it clear which service to the Senate she’s offering, because I saw Senator Cherargei getting very excited when he saw a lady”, Karen said.

“You might think that she is going to do you, you know. It’s good to specify which service she is going to offer the Senate, so welcome very much to the Senate”, she added.

However, the comments were widely criticised as disrespectful and inappropriate towards the young female learner.

Following the incident, Speaker Amason Kingi directed the senator to issue an apology.

Nyamu later acknowledged that her utterances were unacceptable and offered an unreserved apology to the Senate, the student, the family, and the public.

Presenting a written, unreserved apology to the Senate, she admitted that her statements fell short of the dignity and respect expected of a state officer.

“I acknowledge that the utterances I made on Wednesday while welcoming the student were inappropriate and fell short of the dignity, decorum and respect expected of a state officer, particularly towards a young female learner”, Karen Nyamu said in her apology letter.

I reaffirm my commitment to uphold the values and integrity of the Senate and to treat all people, especially young people engaging with Parliament, with the respect and dignity they deserve,” the nominated Senator added.
