Vancouver Unveils Plan to Turn Science World Dome into Giant 2026 World Cup Soccer Ball

Vancouver is set to capture global attention after plans were confirmed to transform its iconic dome into a giant World Cup soccer ball ahead of the 2026 tournament.‎‎

This comes after reports revealed that Science World will be covered with 131 custom panels to replicate the official match ball of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.‎‎

According to project details, the structure will take on the appearance of the Adidas Trionada, with installation beginning on May 6. ‎‎

The initiative is being spearheaded by Destination Vancouver, with CEO Royce Chwin stating that the transformation aims to create a “globally iconic image” that connects Vancouver to the tournament while showcasing the city’s creativity and ambition.‎‎

The project has also received backing from government officials, including Anne Kang, who emphasized that turning the dome into a football symbol will help attract new audiences and generate long-term benefits for the region.‎‎

However, questions have emerged among some stakeholders regarding the cost implications and the use of public resources, especially after earlier panels installed on the dome in March sparked speculation before being clarified as unrelated to the World Cup.‎‎

Amid the growing attention, officials have defended the project, noting it forms part of a broader strategy to boost tourism, cultural engagement, and economic activity during the tournament period.‎‎In addition to the visual transformation, Science World will host an official FIFA exhibition from May 15 to September 7, focusing on sports technology and interactive fan experiences.‎‎

This development comes at a critical time as Vancouver finalizes preparations to host seven matches during the 2026 World Cup, including an opening fixture on June 13 between Australia and Turkey.

With the tournament set to be the largest single-sport event in the world, jointly hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, the city is positioning itself as a key destination for global fans.‎‎
