COTU Clashes with Gachagua Over Remarks on Atwoli

The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) has criticised former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following his public attack on the union and its Secretary General, Francis Atwoli.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 6, COTU termed Gachagua’s remarks as unwarranted and driven by a quest for public attention.

The union further accused the former DP of pursuing a path it claims could undermine national cohesion in the wake of his impeachment, warning that continued attacks on institutions and individuals linked to the current administration would not sit well with Kenyan workers.

COTU also defended its legacy, noting that it was established before independence and has played a longstanding role in advancing and safeguarding workers’ rights in the country.

The union also rejected Gachagua’s proposal to form a rival labour umbrella body, describing the idea as misguided and reflective of a limited understanding of trade union structures.

They maintained that such a move is impractical, stressing that labour organisations are built on established legal frameworks and cannot be created arbitrarily for political purposes.

COTU emphasised its longstanding foundation, noting that it is legally recognised, has deep historical roots, enjoys international standing, and represents millions of workers through its affiliated unions.

It further argued that Gachagua’s criticism may be driven by dissatisfaction following the Labour Day celebrations in Vihiga County, adding that the gains highlighted during the event directly benefit workers, including those from regions he claims to represent.

On Tuesday, during the launch of the Kenya Labour Market and Worker Welfare Report 2026, former Gachagua criticised Francis Atwoli, accusing him of failing to effectively champion workers’ rights.

The DCP party leader argued that the COTU Secretary General had not done enough to advocate for workers during this year’s Labour Day celebrations, instead aligning himself with the government.

Gachagua further claimed that many Kenyan workers have been left without adequate representation, alleging that the union leadership prioritises close ties with those in power over workers’ interests.

He also reiterated his call for the establishment of a new labour organisation to rival the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU).
