The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has announced plans to close the murder case against John Matara, who is accused of killing 24-year-old socialite Starlet Wahu, the sister of Pastor Victor Kanyari.
In an update on Monday, May 4, the ODPP said the matter, which is being heard at the High Court in Nairobi, is nearing completion as prosecutors conclude their presentation of evidence.
The office indicated that the final stages of the case have been delayed after the last prosecution witness failed to appear in court, prompting judicial intervention.

The High Court recently issued summons to compel the attendance of the witness, with proceedings expected to continue ahead of the anticipated closure of the prosecution’s case.
ODPP confirmed that 16 witnesses have already testified with only one remaining witness expected before the prosecution closes its case.
The office noted that the final witness, a doctor from Mbagathi Hospital, is scheduled to testify when the matter comes up on May 14, 2026, after which the State intends to formally conclude its case.
The ODPP further disclosed that Matara has remained in custody throughout the proceedings after it successfully opposed his release on bail.
Once the prosecution closes its case, the defence will have the option to apply for a no-case-to-answer ruling, arguing that the evidence presented is insufficient to require a defence.
If the court finds there is sufficient evidence, the trial will proceed to the defence stage, where Matara will be required to present his case. If not, he may be acquitted without being placed on his defence.
The late Wahu was found dead in a pool of blood at a rented apartment in South B, Nairobi.
CCTV footage showed Wahu and Matara checking into the apartment together after booking it for a night, appearing calm and in good spirits as they entered the building.
The following morning, the apartment owner alerted authorities after discovering a suspected crime scene, prompting police to respond.
Officers recovered several items from the scene, including an HIV testing kit, used protective materials, alcohol, the victim’s clothing, and a knife believed to have been used in the incident.
