Governor Kang’ata Comments on Rumoured DCP Shift

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has stated that he has not yet made a final decision on whether he will run in the next general election under the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

Speaking on Sunday, May 3, the governor noted that he is still engaging in consultations and carefully evaluating his political options ahead of the polls.

At the same time, Kang’ata clarified that he is not planning to leave the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) for now, despite reported differences with William Ruto.

He indicated that their disagreements stem from political strategy, but emphasized that their long-standing relationship remains intact, particularly following recent engagements such as the Murang’a investment conference.

Kang’ata noted that he chose to address his concerns directly with William Ruto in private, explaining that after their discussions failed to yield consensus, he opted to remain silent from around July 2025.

Earlier on Sunday, the county boss announced that he will not seek re-election for the Murang’a governorship on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket in the 2027 general election.

He indicated that the decision was reached after careful consideration, adding that he will communicate, at a later stage, the political platform he intends to use to defend his seat.

Kang’ata emphasized that his move should not be viewed as a fallout with the ruling party, noting that he remains committed to his current duties and will continue working with President Ruto and the national administration for the remainder of his term.

The governor also clarified that he has no ambitions of seeking national executive office, stating that his political focus remains on retaining the Murang’a governorship.

He noted that his interests do not conflict with those of Ruto, emphasizing that his priority is to defend his current seat rather than pursue the presidency or deputy presidency.
