KNH Denies System Collapse Amid Reports of Patient Delays

Kenyatta National Hospital has confirmed delays in the new digital system for capturing patient data in a setback, dismissing reports that the entire system has collapsed.

In a statement, KNH confirmed the delays in patient discharges and billing due to the system failure,.

According to a statement by the hospital, the challenges experienced were minor problems that are common in large-scale digital transitions.

KNH revealed that the hospital experienced temporary service delays, particularly in clearance and billing processes, but maintained that patient care and safety were never compromised.

“While minor teething challenges were experienced, particularly in discharge processes, these have now been resolved. The system has not collapsed; it remains operational and is stabilising as deployment continues,” the statement read.

In response to the matter, KNH assured the public that it remained committed to patient care and safety.

“The Hospital regrets any inconvenience caused by earlier delays in services, including patient clearance and billing, and assures the public that patient care and safety remained the top priority throughout,” it added.

The facility is moving from the manual system into a fully digitised system known as Afya Apex that automates and integrates clinical and administrative services across departments.

According to reports, the rollout began on April 15 and will be completed within 90 days, meaning it is still being implemented despite the challenges it is facing.

According to the hospital, for over 125 years, its operations have relied heavily on paper-based records, which it now considers outdated and incompatible with modern healthcare delivery.

It further called on patients and stakeholders to support the transition, describing the move as critical to improving efficiency, transparency, and quality of care.
