Raging Floods Block Section of Busy Mombasa Road

A section of Mombasa Road has been rendered impassable after flooding triggered by ongoing heavy rains.

In a statement issued on Friday, May 1, the Kenya Red Cross reported that rising water levels had led to significant flooding along the busy highway, particularly near the Eastern Bypass.

The situation has caused a major traffic snarl-up, with congestion stretching nearly three kilometres from Cabanas to Ole Sereni Hotel.

Images and videos shared online show several lorries partially submerged in floodwaters near the Cabanas area.

Notably, flash floods have also been reported near T-Mall along Lang’ata Road.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, a vehicle was trapped in a ditch with occupants inside, but all those on board were safely evacuated.

The organisation further indicated there are unconfirmed reports of missing persons and households marooned in the Mukuru Kwa Njenga area, prompting the deployment of response teams to assess the situation and coordinate assistance.

In a separate incident, flooding from the Kandisi River along Magadi Road led to three individuals being trapped in a lorry before they were successfully rescued.

This follows a heavy rainfall advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department ahead of the Labour Day celebrations.

In its latest forecast, Kenya Met warned of continued heavy rains across Central Kenya and parts of the Rift Valley, with additional rainfall expected in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Coast, and Northeastern regions.

The agency indicated that areas in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley will experience morning rains, afternoon thunderstorms, and evening showers, while North Western Kenya is expected to receive intermittent rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.
