Key Nairobi Roads and Estates Flooded After Heavy Rainfall

Key road sections in Nairobi and several estates were left flooded and impassable following heavy overnight rains, with roads submerged from Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Images and videos circulating online show areas such as Utawala, the Ruai bypass, and Kariokor roundabout among the most affected by the flooding.

The floods disrupted transport operations across the city, leaving commuters stranded as rising waters rendered major roads unusable.

In Utawala, residents woke up to a swollen stream that had overflowed its banks, with floodwaters invading nearby homes in the estate.

The flood also swept through gates, with videos showing fast-moving water spilling into residential areas on Tuesday morning.

Along the Ruai Bypass near the Kangundo Road junction, sections of the road were submerged, causing a major traffic jam as vehicles stalled and passengers were stranded.

At Kariokor Roundabout near Riverside, flooding overwhelmed drainage systems, with reports of raw sewage mixing with floodwater, while pedestrians around Kariokor Market were forced to wade through contaminated water.

Seasons Road towards Clay City was also rendered impassable after being submerged.

The disruptions followed heavy overnight rains on Monday, with the Kenya Meteorological Department warning of continued rainfall in Nairobi and other regions this week.
