DCI Uncovers Gang Posing as Police in Nairobi Robbery Spree

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has uncovered a criminal gang linked to a string of violent robberies in Nairobi and its surrounding areas, involving suspects who posed as police officers to target victims carrying large sums of cash.

According to the agency, detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and the Operation Action Team (OAT) arrested three suspects believed to be behind the coordinated attacks.

The suspects were identified as Boniface Kilonzo Mwaniki, Josphat Musili, and Muia Mutune, who were apprehended in separate locations including Lusaka Road, Dandora Phase IV, and Kalawa in Makueni County.

Investigations revealed a consistent pattern in the robberies, where victims were intercepted by individuals dressed in police uniforms or reflector jackets and accused of offences to create a false sense of authority.

In one incident on January 23, 2026, a Chinese national was robbed of over Sh2 million after being stopped along Mombasa Road shortly after withdrawing cash from two banks.

In other cases, victims were forcibly taken into the suspects’ vehicles, assaulted, and robbed of millions of shillings before being abandoned in different locations.

Detectives established that the gang frequently used vehicles with altered registration plates to evade detection.

Authorities recovered a getaway vehicle, reflector jackets, and other items linked to the crimes.

The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, with efforts underway to apprehend additional members believed to be part of the wider network.
