Rising Violence Prompts Truckers to Warn of DRC Transport Shutdown

Kenyan truck drivers are have cautioned to suspend all operations to the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after the killing of driver Edwin Njuguna in Bunia.

In a statement issued by the Long-Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LoDDCA) on Thursday, April 16, 2026, it warned that unless the government and employers act urgently to protect drivers, a full operational shutdown of the DRC route is highly likely.

According to the association, this is the third time an incident of this nature has occurred without the relevant authorities providing any response in the Eastern DRC.

“The recent tragic killing of Kenyan driver Mr Edwin Njuguna under distressing circumstances marks the third reported incident in the recent past, highlighting a growing pattern of risk, inadequate protection, and insufficient accountability within cross-border transport operations in the region,” the association stated.

LoDDCA further revealed that Njuguna’s employer has not issued an official statement or demonstrated meaningful engagement or support, including assistance in the repatriation of the deceased’s body to Kenya for dignified burial.

The association is now in dire reflection of a recurring pattern where transport companies abandon workers and their families after deadly incidents, leaving grieving relatives without answers, support, or any form of accountability from those responsible.

LoDDCA now wants the ministry to put in place enforceable emergency response and evacuation protocols, alongside the timely and dignified handling of future incidents involving Kenyan nationals operating in the DRC and other high-risk cross-border zones.
