Former Lawmaker Behind Widely Shared “Ulisikia Wapi” Video Dies

Former Tanzanian Member of Parliament Seleman Bungara, popularly known as Bwege has passed away.

According to reports, the widely recognised for his viral “Uliskia wapi” phrase, died on Monday in Dar es Salaam while receiving treatment.

He had been waiting for dialysis services when his condition suddenly worsened leading to his death.

Bungara once represented the Kilwa South constituency in Tanzania which marks an end of a political career that spanned over a decade.

During his reign as an MP, he won multiple terms under the Civic United Front (CUF) before later joining the Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT Wazalendo).

Bngara built a reputation as a vocal legislator who did not shy away from confronting issues on the floor of the House

Reports indicate that he also served several committees in Parliament, including the Agriculture, Livestock and Water Committee between 2010 and 2013, the HIV and AIDS Affairs Committee from 2013 to 2015, and later the Social Development and Services Committee.

Bungara gained fame across East Africa in 2020 after a video clip from a press conference circulated widely online.

In the clip, he angrily dismissed claims that he had defected to the ruling party and asked reporters, ” Oli Sikia wapi? in a tone that everybody found humorous.

The phrase quickly spread on social media, especially in Kenya, where it was often stylised as “Oliskia wapi?” and turned into a popular meme, used in online conversations and on merchandise.
