Lupita Nyong’o has spoken about the challenge she has faced when trying to lose her Kenyan accent.
This she said in a recent interview.
She said in the act of wanting to change her accent, she went to drama school since she knew from the beginning she had a problem with her accent.

She said she went to drama school because she did not just want to be an instinctive actor but understand her instrument in order to know what she was good and not good at to improve herself.
The actor said that making new sounds in a context that wasn’t a classroom felt like betrayal, as she didn’t feel like herself, she cried many nights.
Lupita said she was method with the American accent as she wanted to succeed as an American actor. This led her to sometimes call her family and speak in an American accent.
The award-winning actor added that after training herself with the American accent, someone told her that they needed her just the way she was. It was frustrating as she had already learnt the American accent.
The actor said that during the moment, her mother told her that the way she sound was a product of her experience which motivated her.
