Inside William Ruto’s Intervention in the Nairobi Hospital Saga

State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed has detailed the Executive’s involvement in the ongoing leadership and management crisis at Nairobi Hospital, framing the intervention as a necessary response to a national interest concern.

Speaking on Monday, March 16, 2026, Mohamed explained that President  Ruto’s engagement with the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA) , the entity that owns and manages the hospital is rooted in his role as the association’s official Patron, a position he has held since 2023.

The spokesperson revealed that the government’s involvement is not a recent development but the result of a year-long effort to stabilize the institution.

He went on to disclose that the intervention was prompted by a direct appeal from stakeholders and patients who highlighted a cycle of mounting litigation and ineffective internal conflict resolution.

Beyond these legal hurdles, the President was briefed on specific allegations of financial mismanagement, leadership wrangles, and disputes surrounding the KHA membership register and board elections.

According to the State House, these mediated engagements have already yielded a roadmap for recovery through a five-point reform agenda.

This plan led to the recent reconstitution of the hospital’s Board of Management and the appointment of an independent firm to conduct a forensic audit into the financial concerns raised by stakeholders.

Furthermore, the Attorney General dispatched inspectors to investigate the KHA’s affairs, recently submitting a formal report on the findings to the government.

Addressing the recent arrests of senior hospital officials, Mohamed emphasized that these were not arbitrary or isolated incidents.

He clarified that the arrests followed established legal processes and were the culmination of exhaustive investigations and the year-long consultative process.

President Ruto has now issued a directive for the timely conclusion and implementation of the pending inspection report.

The Spokesperson noted that the President’s primary goal is to safeguard the interests of patients, medical staff, and employees while ensuring the hospital operates through transparent and sustainable governance.

State House maintains that resolving the governance and financial challenges facing the Nairobi Hospital is a matter of national interest that must be handled through lawful and transparent procedures.
