Martha Karua Sets Record Straight on 2007 Kibaki Support

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has defended her role in former President Mwai Kibaki’s administration, responding to an online claim comparing her actions during the 2007-2008 political crisis to those of President William Ruto.

On X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, March 16, Karua addressed criticism suggesting she played a similar role for Kibaki as Ruto did for Raila Odinga during the disputed 2007 general election.

Karua firmly rejected the comparison, emphasizing that while she supported Kibaki, she did not participate in or endorse electoral malpractice or political violence.

She further clarified that her involvement during the period was more akin to veteran politician James Orengo’s support within Raila’s camp.

This development comes over a month after Martha Karua raised concerns over the process that led to the appointment of the Acting CEO at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

In early February, Karua questioned why the commission bypassed the deputies of the former CEO when making the temporary appointment, suggesting possible procedural irregularities.

On February 5, the IEBC announced the appointment of Moses Ledama Sunkuli as its Acting Chief Executive Officer and Commission Secretary, a decision confirmed by IEBC chairman Erastus Edung Ethekon and effective immediately.

The commission explained that the appointment followed the exit of former CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan and highlighted Sunkuli’s extensive experience within the institution.

The IEBC clarified that the appointment of Moses Ledama Sunkuli is temporary, pending the recruitment of a substantive Chief Executive Officer.

Sunkuli is expected to serve in an acting capacity for up to six months or until a permanent CEO is appointed.

The commission emphasized its commitment to fast-tracking the CEO recruitment process, ensuring a smooth leadership transition while maintaining high standards of service delivery to the Kenyan public.
