Flood Crisis Deepens: 49 Dead, Thousands of Families Displaced

Following recent heavy rainfall, reports indicate that death toll has risen to 49.

In a statement by the National Police Service (NPS) on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the police revealed that the total number of deaths have increased to 49 while, 2,624 families have been displaced.

Additionally, infrastructure and property have suffered extensive damage in several regions.

“Following the devastating rains on Friday, March 6, 2026, 49 people have unfortunately lost their lives nationwide as a result of the flooding. The National Police Service extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends who have lost loved ones during this difficult period,” the statement read.

The statement further revealed that among the facilities affected are at least 16 police stations that have been damaged by the floods, posing operational challenges to law enforcement services.

However, the police stated that they are working to ensure uninterrupted policing services, urging members of the public to remain vigilant and follow the advice of the Kenya Meteorological Department.

This comes at time when the Kenya Meteorological Department have warned the public of persistent rainfall in 6 regions, including Western Kenya, Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, and South Coast, from Tuesday, March 10 to Sunday, March 16.

Residents living in these counties have been urged to brace for light showers, mostly in the morning, which would increase in intensity into the afternoon and on cloudy nights.
