Access to Sections of Karura Forest Suspended After River Flooding

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has restricted public access to parts of Karura Forest following heavy rainfall that caused rivers within the forest to overflow.

In a statement on Friday, March 6, KFS said the ongoing rains have resulted in flooding in certain areas, prompting the closure of several trails for safety reasons.

Authorities noted that paths leading to the caves, waterfalls, and bridges have been closed and urged visitors not to enter the restricted zones.

The public has been advised to exercise caution, follow instructions from forest officials, and report to the foresters’ office for any concerns.

This follows clarification by the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) regarding ongoing construction at its Karura Forest headquarters.

In a statement on Thursday, February 26, KFS explained that the works involve building housing facilities for National Youth Service (NYS) personnel, who will assist the agency in environmental restoration and tree-raising initiatives.

The agency noted that the project is part of a wider national rollout across multiple forest stations, not limited to Karura.

Similar barracks are also being developed in other locations, including Ngong Hills Forest, where construction is nearing completion.

KFS said the NYS partnership aims to boost labour for tree seedling production to help achieve Kenya’s goal of 15 billion trees and 30% tree cover by 2032.

The agency clarified that the temporary barracks are within an existing administrative zone and denied allegations of land grabbing or encroachment into protected areas.

KFS affirmed that all activities are being conducted in compliance with Kenya’s forest conservation laws.
