Impeachment Looms for Johnson Sakaja as 55 MCAs Allegedly Sign Motion

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja might be removed from his office allegedly next week.

This comes after a number of Ward Representatives declared they have the necessary numbers to initiate impeachment proceedings.

Speaking to the press on Friday, February 20, 2026, Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai revealed that the push for ouster has gained a significant push to reach requirements for the motion to be tabled.

According to Alai, they have already secured 13 more signatures than the 42 required by law to present the motion to the County Assembly.

“We need only 42 signatures to ensure that the motion is presented to the County Assembly; we already have 55. I think we have enough numbers, the threshold we’ve hit, and I think by next week we will be able to ensure that we file the motion to impeach the governor of Nairobi,” Alai stated.

Among the grievances aired out included delayed disbursement of bursaries to needy students, the mismanagement of garbage collection across the city, and a failure to implement development projects at the ward level.

However, the Nairobi Assembly Speaker Ken Ng’ondi stated on February 19, 2026, that his office has not yet officially received any impeachment documents.
