NPS Officers Serving in UNMISS Receive UN Peace Medals

National Police Service (NPS) officers deployed under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been honoured with United Nations Service of Peace Medals for their exemplary service.

A total of 27 officers received the awards during a ceremony held in Juba on Saturday, February 7.

The event was attended by senior UNMISS officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and other invited guests.

Representatives from the Kenyan Embassy were also present, including a delegate on behalf of Ambassador Benedict Watamba, RJMEC Chairperson Retired Major General Aggrey Owino, senior UNPOL leaders, and the Defence Attaché at the Kenyan Embassy in South Sudan, Colonel Martin Owino.

The medals were presented by the Guest of Honour, Officer-in-Charge Police Commissioner Jeremiah Togba Massaqoui.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, in remarks delivered on his behalf by Kenyan Contingent Commander Mbatian Kantai, commended the officers for their professionalism, discipline, and dedication while serving in a demanding environment.

He noted that the Kenyan contingent has remained instrumental in supporting the UNMISS mandate by protecting civilians, facilitating humanitarian assistance, securing key installations, and promoting peacebuilding efforts at the community level.

Among those recognised were UNMISS UNPOL Gender Adviser Millicent Alambo and Kioko Munyambu, the Team Leader of the Anti-Cattle Raiding Specialised Police Team.

Other awardees included Magongo Amadiva, Kipsang Kipkazi, and Silas Kiptoo, alongside several officers involved in specialised policing, civilian protection, and community-based peace initiatives.

In October 2024, Kenya deployed police officers from the Kenya Police Service, Administration Police Service, and the DCI to serve a one-year term under the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.

NPS said the officers met Inspector General Douglas Kanja before departure, where he urged them to uphold discipline, professionalism, and teamwork.

In March 2025, an additional four police specialists from the same units were deployed to support peacekeeping operations through specialised duties aligned with international policing standards.
