Martha Karua Questions Appointment of IEBC Acting CEO

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has questioned the process behind the appointment of the Acting CEO at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

In a statement on Friday, February 6, Karua raised concerns over why the commission bypassed the former CEO’s deputies in making the temporary appointment.

The move follows IEBC’s announcement on Thursday, February 5, appointing Moses Ledama Sunkuli as Acting Chief Executive Officer and Commission Secretary.

IEBC Chairman Erastus Edung Ethekon confirmed that the leadership change took effect immediately.

The IEBC explained that the appointment followed the departure of former CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan and highlighted Moses Ledama Sunkuli’s experience within the commission.

Sunkuli, who serves as the Commission’s Director of Electoral Operations, was chosen for his extensive experience and institutional knowledge.

The commission noted that the appointment is temporary while the recruitment process for a substantive CEO is underway.

The IEBC confirmed the exit of CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan on February 3, describing it as a mutually agreed decision.

The commission said the search for his successor is underway and an acting official will be appointed to ensure continuity in operations, including elections and boundary delimitation.

Marjan’s departure is also part of a broader Secretariat restructuring aimed at improving efficiency and accountability.
