Night Fire Engulfs Shauri Slum in Embu, Residents Face Massive Losses

A massive fire tore through Shauri slum in Embu Town on Monday night, February 2, leaving dozens of families homeless and causing property losses worth millions of shillings.

The flames spread rapidly through the densely packed iron-sheet and wooden structures, forcing residents to flee and salvage what they could from their homes.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the fire quickly engulfed the area, raising concerns over the county leadership’s preparedness and the effectiveness of emergency response.

Limited resources and equipment hampered efforts to contain the blaze.

By the time firefighters brought the fire under control, dozens of homes had been reduced to ashes, leaving families to grapple with the loss of their belongings.

No deaths were reported, but several residents were left traumatized after spending the night outdoors.

This comes days after a Range Rover burst into flames along the Nairobi Expressway.

In the aftermath, Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji visited the affected community to offer support to victims and evaluate the scale of the destruction.

According to Moja Expressway, the vehicle developed a mechanical fault near the Southern Bypass entrance around 9:04 AM, which led to the blaze.

Passengers were safely evacuated by the company’s patrol team and police before the fire was extinguished.

Traffic was briefly disrupted, and motorists were urged to exercise caution while debris is cleared.

Photos and videos show the luxury SUV engulfed in flames with thick smoke rising into the air.
