COTU Boss Atwoli Cautions Matiang’i Over 2027 Strategy

COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has cautioned Fred Matiang’i against relying entirely on retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to secure the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

Atwoli argued that political success requires independent action and strategic planning rather than depending solely on influential figures.

Speaking on Wednesday, January 7, he blamed Uhuru for the late Raila Odinga’s defeat in the 2022 elections, noting that although the former president publicly supported Raila, he did not effectively mobilize the campaign machinery.

Atwoli suggested that this experience should serve as a warning for Matiang’i as he plans his own political moves.

He emphasized that Matiang’i needs to focus on building his own political base and coordinating his campaign efforts, rather than expecting that backing from Uhuru alone will guarantee victory.

Atwoli’s remarks highlight the importance of independent political strategy in Kenya’s upcoming elections.

COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli’s remarks come amid internal wrangles in the ODM party over the handling of funds for Raila Odinga’s 2022 campaign agents.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna accused Suna East MP Junet Mohamed of mismanaging funds donated by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, while Junet maintained that the money was released to Uhuru’s brother, who appointed another person to handle payments.

The dispute highlights lingering tensions over the 2022 elections, with accusations and counterclaims between party leaders.

Meanwhile, Fred Matiang’i, recently appointed Jubilee Deputy Party Leader, is preparing for a 2027 presidential bid, hosting delegations at his Nyansiongo residence to consolidate his political base.
