Makau Mutua Fires Back at Critics Targeting MP Junet Mohamed

Law scholar Makau Mutua has come out in defense of Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, dismissing criticism directed at the lawmaker as ill-motivated and driven by jealousy.

In a statement on Tuesday, January 6, Mutua described Junet as one of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s most loyal and trusted allies, arguing that those attacking him lack both moral authority and political credibility.

He maintained that Junet’s critics harboured long-standing resentment but were previously restrained by Odinga’s confidence in the MP.

Mutua said Junet distinguished himself through unwavering loyalty, noting that he never betrayed or undermined Odinga at any point.

He added that the former prime minister placed deep trust in Junet, a confidence that set him apart from other political figures.

The law scholar further praised Junet’s integrity, intellect and strategic acumen, while dismissing narratives targeting the legislator’s family as malicious, desperate and politically ineffective.

This comes a day after tensions flared when Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna accused Junet Mohamed of mismanaging funds intended for election agents during the 2022 General Election.

On Saturday, January 3, Sifuna alleged that Junet had criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s contributions despite having received support from him during the campaign period.

He further noted that a significant portion of ODM’s election financing originated from the former president.

Sifuna blamed Junet for allegedly pocketing funds meant for agents, claiming this failure enabled the current administration to defeat ODM.
