Cabinet Okays Muthaiga–Kiambu Road Dualling

The Cabinet has approved the dualling of the 23.5-kilometre Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi Road to ease congestion and improve mobility between Nairobi and Kiambu counties.

A statement from the State House on Tuesday, November 11, indicated that the project will expand the existing two-lane road into a dual carriageway featuring bypasses, loops, and access roads aimed at boosting capacity and cutting travel time.

The project will also include non-motorised transport lanes and commuter facilities to promote safety and accessibility.

The corridor serving Muthaiga, Runda, Ridgeways, and Kiambu Town currently faces persistent traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours.

The dualling project forms part of the government’s broader initiative to modernize Nairobi’s metropolitan transport network, aligning with Kenya Vision 2030 and global goals on sustainable infrastructure and mobility.

The approval follows months after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) canceled the tender for upgrading the Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi road.

The tender, advertised on July 15, 2025, had been limited to Chinese firms or Chinese-led joint ventures.

However, the road agency withdrew the tender a week later without giving any reasons.
