A 22-year-old university student lost his life on October 22, during a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment exercise held in Kabuchai constituency, Bungoma County.
The young man, a student at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), reportedly collapsed while participating in one of the physically demanding training drills that form part of the initial recruitment screening.
While confirming the incident, Bungoma Police Commander noted that the student was among tens of other hopefuls who were participating in a running drill before he collapsed.

The exact cause of death remains unknown, as authorities await the results of a medical examination and postmortem.
The KDF recruitment exercise features rigorous physical drills, including long runs, push-ups, and high jumps, conducted under strict supervision.
Officer Eliud Yegon emphasized that fitness and discipline are key, noting that drug use and poor preparation disqualify many candidates.
He added that mismatched documents, such as differing birth certificates and IDs, also bar some from proceeding.
The ongoing drive targets GSO cadets, Specialist Officers, General Duty Recruits, Tradesmen and Women, and Defence Forces Constables.
