The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga over his controversial remarks on the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
On Wednesday afternoon, NCIC accused the governor of making allegedly divisive and ethnically charged comments while discussing Raila Odinga’s passing.
Commission Chairperson Samuel Kobia said Kahiga’s statements violated Sections 13 and 62 of the NCIC Act, which prohibit language that incites ethnic contempt, hatred, or discrimination.

NCIC has directed Kahiga to appear at its headquarters on the 17th floor of Britam Towers, Upper Hill, Nairobi, to clarify his remarks and assist with ongoing investigations.
NCIC has urged all Kenyans, especially political leaders, to refrain from rhetoric that fuels division, tribal sentiment, or hostility, warning that such statements threaten national peace and stability.
The Commission emphasized that it will take firm and lawful action against anyone making provocative comments, regardless of their rank or political affiliation.
The summons follows Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s resignation as Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors and his apology to Ida Odinga, the late former Prime Minister’s wife.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday morning, Kahiga maintained that his remarks, captured in a vernacular video circulating online, were taken out of context.
According to the county boss, his statement did not in any way reflect the views of the Mount Kenya region, and the remarks were his personal views.
