Live footage captured distressing scenes of mourners sprawled on the ground, shielding their faces from teargas as others trampled over them in frantic efforts to flee.
Police officers were seen using force to drive people out of the stadium as tension escalated, with loud gunfire echoing across the venue while security personnel struggled to regain control of the situation.
The deployment of teargas and the resulting stampede occurred merely hours after the Kenya Red Cross reported treating several individuals injured during earlier processions along Parliament Road and at Cabanas as mourners escorted Raila Odinga’s body to Kasarani Stadium.
The decision to shift the public viewing from Parliament Buildings to Kasarani had been made earlier in the day after massive crowds turned up in Nairobi, overwhelming security and logistical preparations as thousands sought to pay their final respects to the late former Prime Minister.
