The National Police Service (NPS) is once again under scrutiny following the death of a man in police custody under unclear circumstances.
In a statement issued on October 11, Vocal Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid reported that 30-year-old Paul Njuguna died while being held at Kiganjo Police Station.
According to Khalid, Njuguna had been arrested on Thursday, October 9, for allegedly being in possession of bhang.

He further stated that witnesses claimed to have seen police officers assaulting Njuguna prior to his death.
Police officers, however, claimed that Njuguna died after allegedly swallowing bhang wrapped in a paper bag.
The incident comes just days after another suspect, 40-year-old Eric Tonui Koros, a boda boda rider from Solai, Nakuru County, died while in custody at the Solai ACC Police Post.
Koros was arrested on October 7 over an unpaid debt of KSh8,000, and later that evening, police informed his family of his death. He left behind a wife and five children.
On September 30, 40-year-old Alan Kamau Kimani also died under unclear circumstances while detained at Komomwamu Police Post in Migori County.
His mother, Mary Wambui, alleged that police officers had demanded money for his release and threatened her before later calling to report his death.
