Wainaina Speaks After Arrest Over Kyalo Mbobu Murder Case

Kenya African National Union (KANU) Secretary General George Wainaina has finally spoken out for the first time after he was arrested in connection with the murder of Kyalo Mbobu.

In a statement, Wainaina noted that he was arrested after CCTV footage showed him greeting Mbobu at the parking lot of a hotel on the day he was assassinated.

He went on to explain that his interaction with the late lawyer was a brief exchange of pleasantries, noting that he was scheduled to meet with his neighbor on that day.

The secretary general also disclosed that he surrendered his firearm to the police for ballistic testing and availed himself for questioning.

Wainaina described the experience as distressing but emphasized that his ordeal could not compare to the pain being endured by the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Mbobu.

Wainaina conveyed his condolences to Mbobu’s family and expressed gratitude to those who supported him during his arrest and interrogation.

He, along with Eric Muia and Paul Mbugua, had been arrested on Thursday over the lawyer’s killing but were released on the evening of Saturday, September 14, after questioning by DCI detectives.

Lawyer Mbobu was gunned down on Tuesday, September 9, when assailants on a motorcycle sprayed his stationary car with bullets along Magadi Road, fatally wounding him.

Pathologist Johansen Oduor later confirmed that Mbobu sustained eight close-range gunshot wounds, leading to massive bleeding and ultimately causing his death.
