CHAN2024: Nigeria Crashes Out After Heavy Defeat to Sudan

Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles have been eliminated from the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) following a crushing 4–0 defeat to Sudan in their second Group D match at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.

The loss came just days after Nigeria suffered a 1–0 defeat to defending champions Senegal in their opening match, leaving them bottom of the group with zero points and no mathematical chance of advancing to the knockout stage.

This marks Nigeria’s worst-ever CHAN campaign, having failed to score a single goal and with one group match still to play.

How the Match Unfolded

Nigeria thought they had taken the lead early on, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review. Sudan capitalised soon after:

An own goal put Sudan ahead.

A penalty conversion doubled their lead.

Abdelrazig Omer Yagoub struck twice in the second half to seal a comprehensive victory.

Coach Eric Chelle attributed the defeat to “mistakes and poor execution” while acknowledging the team’s defensive lapses and lack of cutting edge in attack.

Other Eliminated Teams

Nigeria joins several nations already out of the competition:

Group A: Angola 🇦🇴, Zambia 🇿🇲

Group B: Burkina Faso 🇧🇫, Central African Republic 🇨🇫

Group D: Nigeria 🇳🇬

Group C eliminations are set to be determined tonight.

What’s Next?

Nigeria will play their final group match purely for pride, while Sudan and Senegal battle for top spot in Group D.

The competition continues to intensify as the knockout phase draws near.
