The first African student to be admitted to Alliance Girls’ High School, Abigail Kageha Indire, died on April 30 at 94.
Her death came two weeks after she buried her husband, Professor Philomena Fundi Indire, Kenya’s first African professor of education.
The two are said to share a powerful bond that began in the early school days at Kaimosi Primary School, which led to a lifetime partnership and shaped the Kenya’s academic legacy as well.
Kageha’s burial is scheduled for May 16 as the preparations for her resting place are underway.

Alliance High School paid tribute to Kageha on May 3, 2025, stating that she was a cherished member of her community and her contributions will be deeply missed.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved alumna, Mrs Abigail Kageha Indire, who was admitted to the Alliance Girls’ High School in 1948 as admission No. 001”, part of the statement read.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mrs Abigail Indire’s family and friends during this time of grief. May Mrs Abigail Indire’s memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to us all”, the statement added.
