Ruben Amorim to Step Down as Manchester United Manager

Ruben Amorim has acknowledged that he should consider stepping down as manager if Manchester United continues their poor league performance into the next season.

United’s disappointing finish took another hit at Old Trafford as they lost 2-0 to West Ham, a team that had not won any of their previous eight matches.

In addition to reflecting on his own future, Amorim stated:

“We are losing the sense that we are a massive club, and it’s the end of the world to lose a game at home. If we are no longer afraid of losing as Manchester United, and that fear has vanished, it’s the most dangerous mindset a big club can have.”

Since January 26, Amorim’s team has managed to defeat only relegated teams Ipswich and Leicester in the league, and they are currently on their joint worst winless streak in the Premier League, which stands at seven matches.

“Everyone here needs to think seriously about many things,” Amorim commented. “People are focused on the Europa League final, but that is not the main issue. We have bigger concerns to address.”

On a points-per-win basis, United is on track for their lowest points total since the 1930-31 relegation season, during which they would have accumulated 29 points in a 42-game campaign.

Currently, United has 39 points and sits 16th in the table, only above their Europa League final opponents Tottenham and the three teams that were relegated.

Amorim expressed that he felt “embarrassed” by the situation. The Portuguese manager understands that whether United wins or loses in Bilbao on May 21, significant changes must be made, similar to what Ralf Rangnick discussed during his interim tenure following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking in 2021; otherwise, he risks losing his job.
