No Venue; FKF Postpones the Mashemeji Derby

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has officially announced the postponement of the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby due to challenges in securing a suitable venue.

The match between Kenya’s two oldest and most prestigious football clubs, AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia, was originally scheduled for this Sunday.

In a statement released to media outlets on Friday evening, FKF explained that the decision to delay the fixture was prompted by recent developments regarding the availability and suitability of a venue.

“The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) wishes to inform the public that the FKF Premier League match between Gor Mahia FC and AFC Leopards SC, originally scheduled for Sunday, May 11, 2025, has been postponed,” part of the statement read.

According to the federation, the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, which was proposed as the venue, is currently unavailable due to a directive from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The stadium is undergoing final preparations for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

CAF had recommended relocating the match to Ulinzi Sports Complex, suggesting it be held behind closed doors to protect CHAN infrastructure and maintain security standards. However, the management of Ulinzi Sports Complex declined to host the match due to internal safety concerns and fears of potential vandalism.

Following these setbacks, FKF held a meeting on Friday, May 9, 2025, with officials from both Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards to update them on the situation and the reasons behind the postponement.

“With no suitable venue currently available, FKF has resolved to postpone the match to a later date, which will be communicated in due course,” the federation added.

Only five rounds remain in the FKF Premier League season, with the final matches set for May 31. FKF is required to submit the league winner to CAF by July 1, adding additional pressure on the league’s scheduling committee.
