Fresh Row at University of Nairobi After VC Appointment Blocked

The Ministry of Education has dismissed the appointments made by the University of Nairobi Council.

The Ministry termed the process as unlawful.

Principal Secretary Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, on Friday, May 9, 2025, stated that the ministry was not consulted on the appointment of Prof. Francis Jackim Mulaa as the substantive Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) and acting Vice-Chancellor.

Following the announcement, the PS stated that Prof Margaret Jesang will continue serving as the Vice Chancellor with Prof. Ayub Gitau as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) and Prof Francis Mulaa as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Enterprise).

She added that such appointments are done in consultation with the Cabinet Secretary after a competitive process conducted by the Public Service Commission.

She further stated that no council meeting was ever convened to discuss and make decisions on appointments at the University of Nairobi.

This comes after Prof. Ndemo declined appointment as the Vice Chancellor of University of Nairobi.

Ndemo claimed that the appointment was unprocedural since it had not received the legally required concurrence from the Cabinet Secretary of Education.
