Bayern Munich Draw a Victory Away from Reclaiming the Bundesliga Title

Bayern Munich is one victory away from reclaiming the Bundesliga title after defeating Mainz at home.

Leroy Sane opened the scoring by slotting the ball into the bottom corner from close range, giving Vincent Kompany’s team the lead.

Before halftime, Michael Olise jinked inside and fired a low shot past Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner, doubling Bayern’s advantage.

England international Eric Dier sealed the victory in the closing stages with a header from Olise’s corner.

Bayern could have clinched the league title on Saturday if last season’s champions, Bayer Leverkusen, had dropped points. However, Xabi Alonso’s side secured a 2-0 win against Augsburg, maintaining the eight-point gap between the two teams.

Before Leverkusen’s surprising success last season, Bayern had won 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles.

Mainz had an opportunity to reduce their deficit at Allianz Arena when Nadiem Amiri tried to curl a shot into the top corner, but Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig made a diving save to deny him.

The margin of victory could have been even greater, as Sane bent a shot wide of the far post and later sent a delicate chip over the advancing Zentner, which hit the post as Bayern dominated the match.

Thomas Muller made his 500th Bundesliga appearance, coming on with six minutes remaining. The Bayern legend is set to depart the club in the summer.

Regardless of Leverkusen’s result next weekend, Bayern can secure their 33rd Bundesliga title with a victory over RB Leipzig.
