The High Court has directed Uhuru Kenyatta and other government officials to come forward and explain the debt crisis in Kenya.
This followed a lawsuit filed by Busia Senator Okiyah Omtatah and eight others seeking legal accountability over the massive debts accumulated.
Justice Bahati Mwamuye therefore ordered Omtatah to serve all the respondents and interested parties with a petition by May 2, 2025.
Justice Mwamuye further ordered the respondents and interested parties to provide their respective responses by May 23, 2025.

The petition filed questioned the legitimacy of loans taken under the regime of President Uhuru Kenyatta, amounting to 2.2 trillion.
They also accused President Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta of allegedly violating the Constitution through unauthorised acquisition of loans.
“Billions have been borrowed through off-budget loans; loans that never passed through Parliament for approval, borrowed unconstitutionally and not tied to any development projects, as the law demands”, Omtatah stated.
