Activist Boniface Mwangi Recounts Life-Threatening Encounter with Police

Renowned Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi has disclosed how he almost lost his life on April 2 after being attacked by police officers.

In his social media platform X on Monday, April 21, 2025, Mwangi recounted how an incident involving three police officers from the Kilimani Police Station almost left him deceased.

According to him, on Wednesday, April 2, three officers approached him in his office, saying they were responding to an alleged noise complaint.

Mwangi claimed that one of the officers who was drunk and chewing miraa, started being rough on him to the extent of almost shooting him.

“I tried to ask the senior officer at the scene why the officer was working and carrying a firearm while intoxicated and chewing miraa. That’s when all hell broke loose, and a scuffle ensued”, the activist stated.

“They pulled me so hard that the handcuffs wounded my hands and wrists until they came off and fell to the ground. None of the officers bothered to pick up the handcuffs, and one of my colleagues picked them up. We still have them,” he added.

After arriving at the police station, the intoxicated officer followed him to his cell and continued assaulting him.

This attracted the attention of Mwangi’s colleagues, who followed him to the police station and demanded that the officer stop beating him.

The next day, he was arranged to be taken to Nairobi hospital after the commanding officer heard his cries, where he was lucky he hadn’t sustained any fractures.

The activist then narrated that after being discharged, he reported the matter to the Kilimani OCS where he was released on Ksh5,000 police bond and asked not to publicise the matter.

Mwangi did not trust the OCS, who went ahead and reported the matter to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

According to Mwangi, the police filed charges at the Kibera Law Courts while he was out of the country and accused him of ‘offensive conduct and assault’.

Despite his absence, Mwangi claims that the court still issued an arrest warrant after he failed to attend the court hearing on the set date.

The court later set Tuesday, April 22, as the new date for taking plea.
