William Ruto Pledges to Kenya U20 as He Flags them Off to AFCON

President William Ruto pledges to attend the final of the upcoming U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Egypt if Kenya’s Rising Stars make it to the stage with the tournament set to begin on Sunday, April 27.

The President made this commitment on Tuesday morning while hosting the Rising Stars at State House, Nairobi, for a flag-off ceremony before their final preparations in Morocco.

In the draw, Kenya has been placed in Group B, where they will face strong opponents: Morocco, Tunisia, and Nigeria.

During his address to the players, President Ruto acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed complete confidence in the team’s abilities. He made a heartfelt call to action:

“I know you’re heading to Egypt, and I understand that the assignment is tough. However, if you qualify for the final, I will be there. Make me come to the finals of AFCON. Just get there — I’ll be in the stands cheering you on.”

He assured the team of the government’s full support throughout the tournament and encouraged them to represent the nation with pride.

“You have the full support of the Government of Kenya — and my support as well. Thank you, and go make us proud. Make the country proud.”

The President also took this opportunity to praise the country’s football talent and reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure to nurture young athletes.

“We have so much talent in this country. That’s why we’re investing in facilities like the world-class Talanta Sports City. We are committed to raising the standards of football across the board.”

The Rising Stars are scheduled to depart for Morocco on Wednesday, April 16, to complete their final preparations before heading to Egypt for the continental tournament.
