Inter Milan secured a crucial advantage in their quest to advance to the Champions League semi-finals by winning the first leg of their quarter-final tie against Bayern Munich.
The German hosts controlled the game for the first half hour, with England captain Harry Kane hitting the right-hand post with a curling shot. However, Inter took the lead with their first shot on target in the 38th minute.
Following a brilliant team move, Marcus Thuram skillfully flicked the ball into the path of Lautaro Martinez, who scored with a stunning shot using the outside of his boot, sending the ball into the roof of the net.
Thomas Müller, a substitute, equalized for Bayern in the 85th minute with a close-range finish after Konrad Laimer delivered a low cross. This goal appeared to rescue Bayern from defeat, particularly as Müller recently announced his departure from the club after 25 years.
However, the match had one final twist just two minutes from the end. Inter quickly counter-attacked, and Carlos Augusto’s cross was converted by substitute Davide Frattesi, ensuring the Italians left Germany with a vital lead.
This defeat also ended Bayern’s impressive 22-match unbeaten streak at home in the Champions League, which had lasted since 2021. The second leg of the tie will take place at the San Siro on Wednesday, April 16, with the overall winners set to face either Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals.
The final will be held at Bayern.
