NTSA to Reinstate Alcoblow Operations Nationwide

Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) David Chirchir has announced that the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is reintroducing Alcoblow nationwide to combat the rising rate of road accidents across the country.

In a statement on Sunday, April 6, 2025, the CS stated that any driver caught with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) above the prescribed limit shall be fined up to Ksh 100,000 or face a prison term of up to two years or both.

This was after visiting accident victims at Kaplong hospital.

“I have just visited Kaplong Hospital, and it is unacceptable that innocent Kenyans going about their business using public transport are put to such pains and anguish by irresponsible and careless drivers. Some who imagine they can drink and drive”.

Moreover, any person who will be convicted of drinking and driving will be disqualified from obtaining a license for one year.

According to Chirchir, the law has been amended by the National Assembly and grants NTSA the mandate to enforce drunk driving.

The statutory body will, therefore be mounting checkpoints as per the Traffic (Drink-Driving) Rules, 2025, birthed through the amendment of section 4 of the Traffic Act, CAP 403.

The CS further noted that the government will provide a clear framework for the regulation, management, and operation of school vehicles and the transportation of children.

NTSA will also regulate the inspection of private motor vehicles by private inspection of public service vehicles, school transportation, commercial vehicles and driving school motor vehicle.
