Clearing Agent Faces Jail for Soliciting Bribe From Church Leaders

A clearing agent has been fined Ksh.3million or two-year imprisonment for demanding a bribe from church officials.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), in a statement on Friday, April 4 2025, disclosed that Philip Mutua Kilonzo, on October 4, 2020, demanded a Ksh.2.9 million bribe from officials of the United Africa Evangelical Ministry and Grace Children’s Home.

Kilonzo was found guilty of two counts: one of requesting a bribe and the second of obtaining money by pretenses.

Magistrate Celesa Okore found out that on October 1, 2020, the accused misled the church officials into giving him Ksh20,000.

He claimed that the money was for the travel expenses from Busia to Nairobi, which was allegedly for a meeting with KRA officials to resolve a tax dispute between KRA and Grace Children’s Home.

In both accounts where he was convicted, he was asked by the court to pay fine of Ksh1.5 million.

Prosecutor Thelma Nyanja found out that the convict had solicited the same bribe amount on several occasions between October 3 and October 8 2020.
