Govt Issues Stern Warning to Matatus After Student Fatalities

The Ministry of Education has cautioned all drivers after two accidents in Homabay that led to the death of three students.

In a statement on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba mourned with the bereaved families.

“On my behalf and that of the Ministry of Education, I extend our condolences to the bereaved families and also wish a quick recovery to all those injured in the two accidents,” the CS stated.

He, therefore, urged motorists to strictly adhere to the traffic regulations to safeguard lives as students travel home for the Easter holidays.

The tragic incident took place on Wednesday morning and led to the deaths of four people, including three students from the Ober Boys Boarding School.

The 14-seater matatu in which they were traveling into a truck in Kibuon Nyakach.

Moments later, another incident occurred in which five students from Mbita High School were knocked down by a speeding motorist and injured.

Regarding the matter, the Ministry revealed that it’s working with law enforcement agencies to conduct investigations and determine the cause of the two accidents.
