Burkina Faso started their TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations campaign on a positive note, claiming a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Cameroon in the opening match of Group B held in Morocco on Monday.
Asharaf Tapsoba continued his impressive form, scoring both goals for Burkina Faso and securing a solid beginning for the former champions as they pursue another title. Tapsoba had previously played a key role in Burkina Faso’s qualification during the WAFU B qualifiers, where he scored a brace in the final against Côte d’Ivoire.
The talented forward quickly made his mark in the match, netting the opening goal in the 19th minute, which helped settle any early nerves for the team that last lifted the trophy in 2011. He added his second goal just before halftime, in the 41st minute, giving Burkina Faso a comfortable two-goal lead at the break.
After the intermission, Cameroon responded vigorously in search of a goal and aimed to get back into the game, but they faced a strong Burkinabe defense that held firm. Eventually, Cameroon’s persistence paid off when David Nyangono scored in the 75th minute, narrowing the deficit and creating a thrilling end to the match.
With the game drawing to a close and Cameroon pressing hard for an equalizer, Burkina Faso maintained their composure in defense, ultimately securing the vital three points. They will next face Egypt on Thursday. Cameroon, on the other hand, will need to overcome this disappointment as they prepare to meet South Africa on Thursday evening.
