Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has made a surprising move to Dunfermline Athletic Football Club, a team in the Scottish second tier, signing a contract that will extend until the end of the season.
The announcement, made by the club on social media, caught many by surprise, especially since Wanyama had been without a club after leaving Canadian side CF Montreal in December, where he played for four years.
The 33-year-old former Kenya international previously spent two years at Celtic under manager Neil Lennon from 2011 to 2013 before making a £12.5 million transfer to Southampton. He then joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2016 before moving to CF Montreal.
Now, alongside Lennon, he has joined the struggling Championship club, which currently sits second from the bottom of the table with just seven games remaining to play. This weekend, they are set to face Ayr United, who are managed by Wanyama’s former Celtic captain, Scott Brown.
“I’m a midfielder, just like the manager, and I played with Scott Brown,” said Wanyama. He also noted, “My intention now is to help the club stay in the league, and after that, we can sit down and discuss what’s next.”
