Kenya 1-2 Gabon; The Benni McCarthy Tactical Approach

Benni McCarthy made several tactical adjustments as Harambee Stars hosted Gabon at Nyayo Stadium in a 2026 World Cup Qualifiers match, although Kenya ultimately lost 2-1.

In defense, Benni made one notable change by resting Brian Mandela, who plays for South Africa, and giving Johnstone Omurwa a spot in the starting eleven. Omurwa demonstrated quicker decision-making compared to Mandela, and his partnership with Daniel Anyembe was effective, apart from a few chances Gabon had on goal.

In midfield, Benni opted for a double pivot, starting with Teddy Akumu and Richard Odada, while Timothy Ouma played in a creative role. Odada advanced to support the attack, allowing Akumu to hold his position in front of the defensive line.

During the buildup, both full-backs pushed into Gabon’s half, with the offensive players inverting into midfield. Akumu and Odada often shifted to the full-backs’ positions to receive the ball.

This tactical approach worked well, as it allowed the team to create several opportunities against Gabon’s defense, although they struggled to convert these chances into goals. This marked a significant shift in Harambee Stars’ playing style, moving away from the defensive tactics employed by previous coaches, who preferred capitalizing on counterattacks. Now, the team is capable of building plays from the back and attacking in open play.

In the second half, Benni substituted William Lenkupae for Amos Nondi and shifted Rooney Onyango from defense to the flank, placing Nondi at full-back to boost the attacking speed on the right side.

Benni also replaced Teddy Akumu with Duke Abuya, an attacking midfielder, and brought Jonas Ayunga, a striker, on for Timothy Ouma. This left Odada to take on a more defensive midfield role while Duke supported the attacking transition. Ayunga paired with Olunga as dual strikers, aiming to apply pressure and potentially equalize.

Overworked Erick Ouma, who assisted Olunga’s goal, appeared fatigued, as did his teammate Bajaber. Both were rested, with Mansur Okwaro making his debut at left back, while Masud Juma was introduced to enhance the striking force from the left flank.

Despite the attractive football and fighting spirit displayed by the team, Harambee Stars could not secure a second goal. Gabon played cautiously to claim all three points.

However, there were numerous positives to take away from the match, indicating a bright future for the Kenya National Team.
