Senate Proposes Comprehensive Reports to Contractor Registration Process

The construction sector in the country could be set to undergo changes if the proposals by the Senate Committee are pushed forward.

The Senate Committee on Thursday March 20 2025, deliberated on the proposed National Construction Authority (Amendment) Regulations, 202 with a focus on modernising the sector.

Among the proposals put forward was a shift from a document-based assessment of contractors to an experience-based system which will ensure that there is a solid proof of contractors’ hands-on-skills rather than just paperwork.

According to the National Construction Authority (NCA), the current contractor evaluation system developed in the 2013/2014 financial year was outdated and no longer served the emerging needs of the construction centre.

The proposal was to adjust cost limits for construction projects to reflect current economic realities.

The authority has also launched the National Building Code, which introduces stricter regulations on buildings to tackle critical issues.

The Building Code which is expected to come into effect in March will heighten enforced and increased inspection at construction sites to eliminate substandard practices.
